Revival Textile, 2021, Scrap Fabric, Scrap Yarn, Found Buttons, Thread, Hot Glue, 18in x 22in

We as humans contribute to waste more than we likely care to admit. The multitude of waste produced is often out of sight, out of mind, meaning that we typically throw things away without ever thinking about the consequences. This is a huge problem regarding clothing and textiles, as 5% of our landfills are currently occupied by textile waste. This is due in part to trendy companies that produce fast fashion at alarming rates and clothing/fiber goods donations that are not fit enough to make it out onto sales floors. These actions, in turn, are creating environmental issues, while all the while people continue to be careless about throwing away textiles.

As an artist, waste is often produced in my practice. This includes a multitude of different materials, but most often come in the form of textiles or items associated with textiles, such as string, buttons, and yarn. I have always been compelled to save these items, as not to contribute to the already devastating amount of textile waste that we produce. In this work, I explore a solution to using these scrap items in a new work that is completely created from them. The final piece comments on the new life of these leftover materials by formatting them as an abstract rendition of male and female sex organs since, as we know, life is fundamentally created from these. Multiplicity is also investigated in this work through the inclusion of repeated patterns and materials.
